The 2018 theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) is #PressforProgress.  This theme urges women – and men – to continue working on achieving gender equality and safety for women around the world. Gender discrimination is a universal issue, cutting across borders and cultures.  In North America, the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns have gained firm ground and are showing a definite impact.  Can such campaigns be carried into the rural hinterlands of developing countries like India?  Education is the key factor: we need to educate both men and women about the value of women inside and outside the home.  The 2018 call is to unite communities and work together.

Collective action is integral to HUGGS mission.  With the invaluable support of our sponsors, HUGGS Canada actively promotes gender parity by empowering young people through education.  HUGGS’ primary focus is the empowerment of young women, though we now sponsor young men too, in a ratio of 1:3.

In today’s digital world, IWD organizers have created some unique ways in which everyone can participate in spreading the message of gender parity.  For example, "Thunderclap” is one way by which your Facebook account can display a one-time message.

HUGGS Canada is a registered Canadian charity, empowering youth through education in South East India. HUGGS focuses on promising young people who have the ability to excel in education, but are without the resources to study beyond Grade 10.

Thanks to our generous donors, we sponsor young people in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), to complete their secondary and post-secondary education. Students are selected based on financial need, academic ability and family encouragement.

Today more than 30 HUGGS graduates are working in their communities in careers including nursing, teaching, engineering, finance and computing.
